Human Rights and Their Role in Democratic Governance

Abstract

Human rights are fundamental to democratic governance because democracy requires respect for human dignity, equality, liberty, participation, and the rule of law. Democratic institutions are expected to protect individuals from arbitrary exercises of public power while creating conditions for meaningful participation in public life. In India, Fundamental Rights and constitutional remedies provide an important legal framework for protecting rights, while legislation, courts, public institutions, and civil society contribute to their implementation. This paper examines nine major dimensions of human rights and democratic governance, including dignity and equality, civil and political freedoms, social and economic rights, constitutional protection, judicial review, accountability, participation, vulnerable groups, and contemporary challenges.
