Freedom of the Press and Democratic Accountability

Abstract

Freedom of the press is an important component of democratic governance because independent journalism enables citizens to receive information, examine public policies, and scrutinize the exercise of political and administrative power. In India, press freedom is understood as part of the constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech and expression under Article 19(1)(a), subject to the reasonable restrictions permitted by Article 19(2). A free press can contribute to transparency, public debate, investigative reporting, and institutional accountability, while professional standards and responsible journalism help maintain public trust. This paper examines nine major dimensions of freedom of the press and democratic accountability, including its constitutional basis, investigative journalism, access to information, political debate, media independence, digital media, ethical responsibility, challenges, and future prospects.
