Abstract

Reinforced concrete beams are fundamental structural members that transfer loads to columns, walls, and other supports. Their structural behaviour depends on material properties, cross-sectional geometry, reinforcement arrangement, support conditions, and the type and magnitude of applied loading. Under increasing loads, reinforced concrete beams may experience cracking, flexural yielding, shear distress, excessive deflection, and ultimately failure if their capacity is exceeded. This paper examines the structural behaviour of reinforced concrete beams under different loading conditions, including point loads, uniformly distributed loads, concentrated moments, repeated loading, and lateral or dynamic actions. The discussion considers load-deflection response, flexural and shear behaviour, cracking, reinforcement performance, serviceability, failure modes, and factors affecting beam capacity.
